Shopping in Thailand is an experience in itself — from colourful night markets that run into the small hours to giant air-conditioned malls. Whether you're after souvenirs, clothes, cosmetics or gadgets, here's how to shop smart, have fun and not overpay.
Night Markets — The Heart of Shopping
Chatuchak Market in Bangkok (weekends) is one of the largest in the world with thousands of stalls. Phuket has the Patong night market and OTOP, Chiang Mai has the famous Night Bazaar and its weekend Walking Street. Here you'll find clothes, art, souvenirs and great street food at low prices.
Malls — AC, Brands and Cinema
In Bangkok, ICONSIAM, Siam Paragon, Central and MBK offer everything under one roof — from luxury brands to tech stalls. In Phuket there's Jungceylon in Patong and Central. Perfect for a hot or rainy day.
What to Buy
- Clothes and silk — quality and cheap, including tailored suits
- Art and souvenirs — local handmade pieces
- Cosmetics and skincare — at great prices
- Elephant pants and light clothing — a traveller classic
Bargaining — The Most Important Rule
At markets, haggling is expected (in malls it isn't). Start at around half the asking price, smile, and if the price isn't right — thank them and start to walk away. You'll usually get a better offer. Keep it friendly — bargaining in Thailand is playful, not confrontational.
Beware of Fakes
"Genuine" brands at a suspicious price are almost always knock-offs. If it matters to you — buy from authorised sources. And on big purchases, ask about the tourist VAT Refund at the airport.
