Thailand Laws — What Every Tourist Must Know

The rules to know so you travel with peace of mind and no surprises

Thailand is a safe and welcoming destination, but there are a few local laws well worth knowing in advance — some far stricter than people assume, and ignorance can be costly. Here's my guide to everything a tourist should know to travel with peace of mind.

Drugs — A Red Line You Must Not Cross

Thai law on hard drugs is extremely strict, with heavy prison sentences and worse. Don't take any risk, and never agree to carry anything for anyone — not even "for a moment". Cannabis laws have changed several times in recent years; check the current legal status before you travel and assume nothing.

Alcohol — Sale Hours and Age

Alcohol sales are permitted at set hours (usually midday and evening), and the drinking age is 20. In nightlife areas everything is available, but there are religious days (certain Buddhist holidays and elections) when sales are restricted or banned.

Respect the Monarchy — A Serious Offence

The lèse-majesté law criminalises any insult to the king and royal family, including on social media. It's enforced very seriously — simply don't go there.

Visa, Entry and Stay

Check the entry requirements and permitted length of stay in advance. Overstaying incurs a daily fine on departure and can cause future problems. Keep your entry stamp and return-flight details.

Smoking, Vaping and Swimming

E-cigarettes (vapes) are illegal in Thailand — best not to bring them. There are fines for smoking and dropping butts on certain beaches. At the sea — watch for red flags and currents, especially in the rainy season.

Public Behaviour

Dress modestly in temples, don't litter, and don't climb on Buddha statues. Respect and restraint open doors. More on customs and etiquette in our do's and don'ts guide.
