Thailand isn't only for partygoers — it's also one of the most affordable and enjoyable family holidays out there. Calm beaches, attractions kids adore, food everyone loves, warm people and friendly prices. After helping quite a few families, here's my full guide to make your trip smooth, safe and unforgettable.
Why Thailand Is Perfect for Families
Beyond the beauty, Thailand is very easy for family travel: excellent tourist infrastructure, easy-to-find non-spicy food, locals who genuinely love children, and manageable distances with cheap domestic flights. You can combine beach, nature and culture without rushing.
The Best Destinations for Families
Phuket is the classic choice — calm beaches like Kata and Karon, plenty of family resorts and water parks. Koh Samui offers quiet beaches and a relaxed vibe. Krabi and Ao Nang are perfect for combining the beach with island trips and nature. And in the north, Chiang Mai — green, cooler and full of nature and cultural experiences, including ethical elephant sanctuaries. For more on the beaches, see our Phuket beaches guide.
Attractions Kids Will Love
- Water parks — Splash Jungle and Blue Tree in Phuket
- Ethical elephant sanctuaries — watching and feeding, no riding
- Gentle snorkelling in shallow bays and short island trips
- Aquariums and friendly zoos
- Night markets — colours, food and treats for the whole family

Eating with Kids
It's easy to find non-spicy dishes (just ask for "mai phet" — not spicy), fried rice, noodles, tropical fruit and pancakes on every corner. Most resorts and restaurants are used to children and happy to adapt.
Health, Safety and What to Know
Stick to bottled water, high-SPF sunscreen and hats for the hot hours, and mosquito repellent in the evening. Travel insurance that covers children is highly recommended. Bring a small first-aid kit and basic medicines. At the sea — watch the flags and currents, especially in the rainy season.
Getting Around
The Grab app (like Uber) is convenient in the big cities; for long transfers use a taxi or car with a driver; and between regions, cheap domestic flights save hours. It's best to pick one or two bases rather than moving around a lot.
Best Time to Visit
The most comfortable season is November–April: less rain, calm seas and pleasant weather. It's also peak season, so book accommodation ahead.
Accommodation for Families
There are plenty of family resorts with pools, kids' clubs and family rooms. For groups or large families, a villa with a private pool can be especially good value and convenient. I cover every region in our Thailand accommodation guide, and you can see recommendations on the hotels page.
