Half Moon Festival & Jungle Experience in Koh Phangan — Full Guide

Everything you need to know about Koh Phangan's Full Moon side parties

The Full Moon Party isn't the only reason Koh Phangan is Thailand's beach-party capital. In the Ban Tai area, a little further north on the island, two more parties take place that every party lover should know about: the Half Moon Festival and the Jungle Experience. In this guide I break down exactly what each one is, how to get there, and how to combine them with the rest of your trip.

What the Half Moon Festival Is

The Half Moon Festival takes place in the Ban Tai area, inside a dedicated venue that combines an open-air beach club with an adjoining forest/grove section. The style is very different from the classic Full Moon Party — there's more UV art and glow-paint, sound stages focused on electronic and trance music, and especially high-quality lighting design with visual effects that make the place feel almost magical at night. It's a vibe suited to anyone looking for a slightly more "designed" and less chaotic experience than the open beach at Haad Rin, while still packing plenty of energy and a dance floor that never stops.

What the Jungle Experience Is

The Jungle Experience, also in the Ban Tai area, is a party held right inside the forest — a stage built among the trees, lighting projected onto the foliage, and sound stages spread along the paths. The feeling is completely different from a beach party: you're genuinely inside nature, surrounded by the smell of damp earth and trees instead of sea salt. If you want to experience a completely different side of Koh Phangan nightlife — less "tropical beach" and more "forest festival" — this is exactly the party that delivers it.

Why Ban Tai Specifically

Ban Tai is normally a quieter area than Haad Rin — less crowded, with calm beaches and a more rural feel — and that's exactly why it suits dedicated party venues like the Half Moon and Jungle Experience so well. Organisers can build a closed, planned experience there, with a single entrance, better control over crowd and lighting, and enough space for both an open beach club section and an adjoining forest area. It's the opposite of Haad Rin, where the entire open beach spontaneously turns into one party — and that difference is part of the magic of doing both experiences on the same trip.

When They Happen

Unlike the Full Moon Party, which follows a clear lunar cycle, the dates for the Half Moon and Jungle Experience follow a seasonal events calendar that isn't always published far in advance and isn't always possible to verify with high confidence. Rather than guessing or relying on old information, I always check the Koh Phangan parties hub page before confirming a date to clients, and I update it with verified dates as soon as they're published. If you already have flight dates set, message me on WhatsApp and I'll check what's happening on the island that week and whether there's a matching event.

How to Get There and Where to Stay

Ban Tai is a short ride from Thong Sala (the main ferry pier) and from Haad Rin. You can get there by shared songthaew, a local taxi, or a rented motorbike — but if you've been drinking, take a songthaew or taxi instead of driving yourself. Anyone based in Haad Rin can easily do both parties (Full Moon and Half Moon) in the same week without changing accommodation. If you'd rather have a quieter base, you can choose accommodation closer to Ban Tai itself. Either way, plan your accommodation ahead based on the expected dates, and if you're not sure what makes the most sense, I'm happy to help you put it together.

What to Bring and How to Stay Safe

  • Closed walking shoes are a genuine must here, especially at the Jungle Experience — uneven ground, roots and branches, plus broken glass later in the night.
  • Mosquito repellent — you're in a forest at night, this isn't optional.
  • Watch out for strong "buckets" exactly like at the Full Moon Party — drink at your own pace and skip anything that wasn't mixed in front of you.
  • Never get on a motorbike after drinking — motorbike accidents are one of the most common causes of tourist injuries in Thailand, and on dark, unfamiliar roads near Ban Tai the risk is even higher.
  • Police run drug checks in the area from time to time, including on the roads — Thailand is very strict about this, so simply stay well clear of anything like that.
  • Agree on a fixed meeting point with your friends ahead of time — it's easy to lose each other among the trees and the different stages.

Combining It with the Full Moon Party

Many of my guests choose to combine a full week: arriving ahead of the Full Moon Party, staying a few extra days, and if a Half Moon or Jungle event falls in that window, experiencing that too. I wrote a complete Full Moon Party guide covering all the basics if you haven't read it yet. Combining two such different experiences in the same trip is exactly what turns a week on Koh Phangan into something unforgettable.

Who This Is For

If you already know the Full Moon Party and want a different vibe, or simply want to experience a few sides of the island on the same visit, this is exactly for you. Fans of electronic music and visual art will love the Half Moon, and anyone who enjoys nature adventures will especially enjoy the Jungle Experience. Mixed groups, where not everyone wants exactly the same thing, can also split the evening between the different areas and regroup later in the night. I know both venues well and I'm happy to recommend exactly what fits your group's taste.

What to Wear and Local Culture

Outfits at the Half Moon tend to be a bit more "designed" than at Haad Rin — UV body art, glow-print clothing and festival accessories are very common. At the Jungle Experience, on the other hand, it's worth dressing for the terrain: light long layers that protect against bites and branches, plus closed walking shoes as mentioned above. In both cases, remember you're still in Thailand — a country that takes its drug laws extremely seriously, and a party deep in the forest is still governed by exactly the same rules as anywhere else on the island. A respectful attitude toward local staff and any police you encounter is always the right call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the Half Moon and Jungle Experience happen on the same night?

That varies by season and isn't always the case. It's worth checking in advance which events are expected during your week, and I'm happy to help you confirm that based on your dates.

Is this suitable for someone who doesn't love huge crowds like the Full Moon Party?

Yes, these venues are generally smaller and more intimate than the open beach at Haad Rin, while still carrying plenty of energy.

What's the safest way to get back to my accommodation at the end of the night?

The safest option is arranging a songthaew or taxi both ways in advance, rather than relying on finding transport randomly in the small hours.

Should I book a local guide or go independently?

If it's your first time in the area, a little coordination in advance makes a big difference — knowing exactly how to get there, where the entrance is, and what gear to bring saves a lot of confusion on the ground. I'm always available to point you in the right direction or arrange organised transport for you.
